Had to enable "less secure methods" on gmail. Set up seperate gmail account for the NAS to email me since it is a "less secure" thingy. Hope this helps. EDIT - this was reportedly fixed in DSM 5.1 with Synology implementing Gmail's OAUTH correctly.The fix was simple, just untick Authentication required under the SMTP relay settings page, click ok to apply the settings change and then tick Authentication required, clicking OK again to apply settings. Things to check: You need port forwarding set up for the following ports on your Router: 80, 443 & 5001 all pointing to the IP Addrerss of your NAS. .
